Description: Completed in 1869, Clevedon's Victorian pier is regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of this type of architecture.
It was built to serve as an embarkation point for ferry crossings to south Wales. The pier features unusually slender supports to minimize its resistance to the immense and powerful tidal flow of the Bristol Channel.
Structural degradation brought Clevedon pier close to demolition in the 1970s, but it has recently undergone full restoration and is now a protected heritage site. See also WA00065.
