Description: Opened in 1999, this pedestrian swing bridge, with its distinctive counterweights, links the Narrow Quay with Canon's Marsh in Bristol's city centre.
The bridge was named by Bristol City Council after 'Pero', an 18th century slave of Caribbean origin.
Bristol's early wealth and growth as a port owed much to its central role in the slave trade, with Bristol's waterfront a disembarkation and processing
centre for the slave ships. Naming this bridge was a recognition of this wretched aspect of the city's history, and pays tribute to the terrible price paid by
untold numbers of Afro-Caribbeans in creating the city's fortunes two centuries ago.
